In semi-retirement, I have returned as a Collingwood alumna to speak at the Wentworth Totem Ceremony.
Life moves in circles, reminding us that endings fold into beginnings, and that every step adds meaning to the story we are writing – a story always open to renewal and possibility.
Good Morning, Wentworth!
Quietly raise your hand if you like a good story!
Yes, me too! And here’s the truth: your life is a storybook in the making.
As a writer – an aspiring author – and as a teacher, I appreciate any good story. These can encourage and connect us, and help us better understand new ideas.
Every one of you is the author of your own story. Every day, you get to add a new page. And just like your favourite book, your story has important elements.
Your setting is here and now – at home, or at school.
Your characters? Family, teachers, classmates, coaches, teammates, and friends. They’re the ones who share in your adventures, celebrate your wins, and help you through your losses and the tough parts. Be grateful for the support from each of them!
And the plot? That depends on the positive energy you carry with you. Believe me, there will always be space for it in your backpack!
When you’re kind, when you include others, when you give your best effort – your story shines. Your words and actions can light someone up ✨ or dim their day. And that choice? It’s always yours to make!
Now let’s be honest – every story has conflict. Challenges, obstacles, and even chapters we wish we could rewrite. (Think about the story of The Three Bears. They arrive home to find Goldilocks fast asleep in their beds! Hmm… perhaps Goldilocks would want to rewrite that part!) But here’s the secret: conflict makes your character stronger. And when things feel really difficult, it usually means you’re closer to success than you think.
And what about change? Oh, that’s a part of every good story too. It adds surprise and new twists. Sometimes unexpected, sometimes exciting – but change is always an opportunity.
Will the theme of your story this year be:
Being a good friend? A stronger teammate? Will you be someone who embraces every opportunity that Wentworth has to offer?
The magic really happens when you: Dream big. Believe in yourself. Be brave. Learn from your setbacks and take action.
I’ll leave you with two famous quotes to carry into your school year:
Michelle Obama once said, “Success isn’t about what your life looks like to others. It’s about how it feels to you”
Lastly – “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” by Maya Angelou, my favourite inspirational author.
So, Wentworth – let’s get writing. This year, make it a best seller!! Thank You
